Catherine C. Reed

Why are you an artist?

I make things to see how they will look.

Could you tell us some more about your artwork?

In composition, I'm most interested in the balance between pattern and randomness and the work of the eye and brain to derive patterns from randomness. In addition, many patterns including those found in commercial fabrics are icons with informational or symbolic meanings, and there's a sensation of startling myself and the viewer with unexpected combinations. Some pieces are attractive and repulsive at the same time.

Is the subject important to you, or do you simply make art to express yourself?

My subject is the mysterious depths of nature. I don't know what that means--express myself.

What artists have influenced you, and how?

Folk artists have inspired me to go ahead and try anything I want.

What inspires you to make art and how do you keep motivated when things get tough in the studio?

I'm inspired by the materials themselves. I always want to keep my hands on yarn and fabric. When things get tough I put a project aside and play around with some new materials.

How have you handled the business side of being an artist?

So far I have not handled it at all. I have only sold a few pieces to friends.

What advice would you give to an artist just starting out?

Make a regular time and place to do art work and keep it up.

What do you do for fun (besides art)?

Camping and long walks.

Catherine C. Reed, aka Bouteloua, I work in space #183 at 2425 17th St. at Potrero at The Art Explosion studio.
